The 4 A’s of Stress Management

Stress is common. It’s a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges in our lives. Everyone experiences stress to some degree, but the way we respond to stress makes a big difference to our overall well-being and mental health.

We’ve previously shared several tips and strategies for stress management  and about how to complete the stress cycle. The type of coping strategies you need is dependent on the your personal preferences, individual history, and on your mood. Different people need different strategies. And you will also need to use different strategies depending on the situation. It’s essential to have several different tips and strategies in your toolkit.

Another helpful tool when deciding which strategies to use to manage your stress is called the 4 A’s. No matter what strategies you choose to use, they all require some form of change. You can either change your situation, or change your reaction. The 4 A’s help determine which is necessary.

Change the Situation

Avoid: You can choose to avoid the stressor. Learn to say no, set boundaries, or avoid certain people or circumstances that cause you stress.

Alter:  Or you could choose to alter the stressor. Maybe you can’t eliminate or avoid it, but can you change it some way so that it is no longer a stressor to you?

Change your Reaction

Adapt:  You could choose to adapt to the stressor. This includes reframing the problem, shifting your perspective, and focusing on the positive.

Accept:  And finally, you can choose to accept the stressor. This also includes a shift in mindset and involves accepting that there are some things in life we can’t change.
