5 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health on Your Own

Jennifer Ritchie • April 27, 2023

We all experience thoughts, emotions, and feelings everyday but for some these are more distressing and impact our functioning more than others. Approximately 1 in 5 adults experience a mental illness at some point in their life. The need for accessible mental health treatment is at an all time high. With long waitlists, lack of access to high quality treatment, and limited coverage for mental health care, it can be difficult to get the care you need.

Don’t let this discourage you from starting this journey on your own! Information and tools to improve your mental health are readily available to support you on your journey. Many times our therapists recommend similar resources to clients while they are in therapy.

Consider the following tools to support you on your journey:

  1. Read books on mental health
  2. Listen to podcasts on mental health
  3. Participate in mental health awareness activities through organizations in your community, such as libraries, community mental health centers, and hospitals
  4. Take a course on mental health issues
  5. Subscribe to mental health newsletters or follow reliable social media pages promoting mental health topics

These resources can be a great way to work on your mental health with or without therapy. We know it can be hard to reach out for help. If and when you are ready, we are here for you
